We’ll Make a Manga Out of You

by Christina on June 22, 2009

A few times in the past weeks, I’ve mentioned the upcoming Mermaid Parade out on Coney Island.  Some of my friends go every year as the “Brooklyn Bombshells” performing a swing number dressed in vintage bathing suits.  A contingent of us like to go all out creating costumes that are good for marching and not so much dancing.

The parade provided the perfect excuse to pull out an old pair of boxing gloves to center a costume around; with the help of my friend Cindy, I became a fighting fish.  After suggesting that I might post a photo, and since I look NOTHING like this in real life, it is okay to share with you.  I love how “Mama said knock you out” the photo looks. I totally could have too…

However, being dressed in barely there spandex at the parade is quite different from wearing it to the parade.  During my ten-minute walk to a friend’s to catch a ride, I wore a sundress over the costume but was in full make-up–the comments (and avoided looks) made me feel very out of place.  Contemplating how others saw me made me think of a manga character with my blue hair and massive sparkly blue eyelashes.

Post parade, we tend to meet up at for food and celebration.  While waiting for our dinner, Swifty and I ran around the corner to Bergen Street Comics.  Tom and Amy Adams (who own the store) asked us about the parade and should totally go next year!  My purpose in running over was that I’ve been borrowing all my comics up until now.  However, Swifty is missing his copies of Scott Pilgrim Volumes 3 & 4 so this was my first foray into buying my own comics!  Amy even asked to take a photo of me with a copy–which really added to the whole feeling of being a comic book character.

scottI don’t talk about comics much here as I don’t really feel that they qualify as individual items for my book count.  My hope is to talk about them from time to time and once SP6 comes out, I’ll talk about the whole series.  I’ve loved getting involved in the stories and there have been a few times (like at the end of Fables 4) where I’ve practically screamed at the book for ending on a cliff-hanger.  How on earth am I supposed to go to bed not knowing what happens next?!

In the past I’ve always gotten sucked into well-told stories so that whatever is happening around me seems to disappear–the noise from across the street, work, everything.  Just gone.  With this goal of 100 books, I sometimes feel like I’m reading books I don’t like just to make the number and not have to backtrack for the lost time spent reading seventy terrible pages.  The comics seem to make up for that and it’s so fun getting lost in a story again.

Most likely I’ll be going back to the store tomorrow (and looking completely different) so that I can pick up Volume 5–may as well complete the collection and purchase 1 & 2 while I’m at it.  This way I can chew my nails until Volume 6 comes out and then read straight through the entire story.

That picture is effin’ dope.

Swifty’s photography is always full of win, but the costume is great. And you’re right – the expression is brilliant.

OMG that really doesn’t look a thing like you! Love the look, the blue eyelashes are much better than the red ones you were considering.

I saw someone in the red ones – they probably would have gotten caught in the wig and been worse than the blue ones when the rain picked-up. The water started pooling in my eyes and made the glue sting – the things we do in the name of mermaid!

Of course – my apartment now looks like a unicorn exploded in it and I still can’t get the glitter off me or my couch…
