A few days back, Rik Tweeted that he was in DC at the WebWise conference consisting of Library and Museum professionals talking about how to bring their institutions together with digital media and spaces. (BTW, the imagery on their website totally reminds me of the the Worlds Fair or Disney and “Tomorrow Land” – intentional?) Have to admit – I’m a wee bit jealous.
This morning he posted a summary of the time he spent there and a bit about what he learned. Having been sent by Global Kids, most of what he talks about has a youth oriented bent. I haven’t had a chance to speak with him, but am assuming there were discussion about how to integrate technology for all age levels.
This can’t be an easy task; many of these institutions have been around for a long, long time operating under fairly unchanging formats that work. The advent of new uses of technology and interacting such in the past few years cannot have been easy when the purposes of physical space play such an important role for all these institutions – viewing great works of art isn’t the same as looking at a photo of an exhibit online and we are repeatedly learning that an interactive experience for technology users isn’t going anywhere – in fact, as most websites are learning, it is a preferable experience.
As someone who enjoys the tactile experience of going to a museum or library, of getting my hands into paint and onto books, I admit to being wary myself about what direction technology will take us. That said, I’ve been blogging on and off for eight years now and, while not an early adopter, do find myself testing various technology earlier than most. It will be interesting to follow how some of my favorite places such as the MET Museum and NY Public Libraries go forward.
Now a little housekeeping: I’ve totally screwed my schedule up with posting this week. Partly because of that little “vacation” day. So, here’s what’s going on: Yes, I skipped a book in my reviews and am postponing another. There was an event attached to one that I’m now attending next month rather than this evening. I’d like to keep the reviews of both together. There is another event tonight that is the reason for rescheduling and I’ll be posting about that tomorrow. Then there was this little issue of deciding sleep was unnecessary and that staying up until 3am to finish was a much better idea. I was all set to write that review until I read Rik’s post. So, there you have it – so much going on these days more books piling up and a few posts I can’t wait for you to read that will have to wait for another day.
