I'm going to take all of your words that it gets better! It is a lot of fun watching them all and I've already become fond of a few characters. But last night's The Last Outpost makes me wonder if you're all not lying to see how long I'll continue to watch!

Indeed. When the time came in my relationship with my wife to familiarize her with TNG, I skipped just about every single Season 1 episode unless it was to make fun of stuff.

We also skipped a fair amount of Season 2 too. What can I say, I didn't want to give her a bad impression.

As a total Trek newbie, you have my condolences for season 1 of TNG. Yeah, there's some good parts, but it doesn't really pick up until Riker shows up with a beard.

See: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/GrowingTheBeard

I'm interested in hearing more of your first impressions of Trek, since my misspent days as a small kid poring over a Star Trek encyclopedia I've sort of taken an absurd level of familiarity with it for granted.

I'm with Sandy on the show getting tremendously better once it found its space legs. The first season is full of cheese because the budget wasn't all that great and it took a little bit longer than most as far as character development was concerned.

At its core, TNG was a very socially conscious show that produced a lot of episodes that carried some very profound messages without being overly preachy. It really is a great show with characters that you not only grow to care about, but can also identify with at the same time. I really hope that you take to it and find yourself becoming a fan of the show as the series progresses.

Oh, don't give up! There are some cheesy episodes to get through, but ST:TNG really takes off the second, third and fourth seasons. (I think shortly after that is when Babylon 5 came out and ST:TNG fell off my radar. But those seasons are definitely worth watching.) I remember "Measure of a Man" (which was so good it inspired Leonard Nimoy, who had previously said he wanted nothing to do with the new series, to appear in some episodes) and "Yesterday's Enterprise" as being particularly good. Worth the price of admission, at least. :)

Enjoy! We had a wonderful time with this series, back in the day, me and my geeky friends. We gathered around for D&D, stopped to watch the show and munch on junk food, then more D&D. Those were the days!
