Ari & Marcelo – I’m on the fence. There are certain people I won’t take a recommendation from – but those are normally people I’ve known for quite some time and tried a few recommendations in the past. Once I know their reading preferences well, I can normally tell if I’m going to like something they suggest or not. But even with them I’ll “add it to the list” and then ignore it.

Kait – I know a few people who do that, or read something from an author the other likes to impress them.

One woman read “The Game” hoping to get a specific guy to regularly date her because he swore by it. Books like that are a red-flag to me though, the kind of guy living by that book isn’t interested in a committed relationship.

Wait, I’m confused by Marcelo’s comment… so people don’t take other’s book recommendations?

I like when people recommend books to me… sometimes I’ll pick them up and it’s fantastic because I might have never picked it up on my own otherwise. And other times I put it right back on the shelf. Lol!

it’s funny now, but i actually read a few of my boyfriend’s listed “favorites” covertly when we were first dating long distance… i wanted more insight into just what sort of person i was getting involved with, but i didn’t want the pressure that early on of being honest with a bad review if it turned out that i didn’t like them.

so yeah. totally guilty of judging people by their books.

It’s one thing to recommend a book. It’s another to have a book recommended to you. I know plenty of people who are more than happy to do the first but aren’t big on the second. A lot of people look for someone upon whom they can impress a worldview, not participate in an equal give and take. I know I’ve been guilty of it from time to time.
