Upcoming Fundraiser for Spinal Cord Injury

15th July, 2009 No Comments

Back in February I mentioned a book called Eleven Seconds.  It’s the autobiography of Travis Roy who eleven seconds into his first varsity hockey game at Boston University was injured.  Travis is now a quadriplegic.

In 1997, the Travis Roy Foundation was created to raise money for individual grants, research projects, and rehabilitation institutions.

In three weeks, on the weekend of August 7-9, the Annual Travis Roy Foundation Wiffleball Tournament will be taking place.  This will be the first time I get to meet Travis; despite my mother’s involvement over the past few years, I have yet to attend the games.

The tournament now has a Twitter account (@TRFtournament) and Facebook page that you should follow to learn more about what is going on in the world of research for spinal cord injury and to find out what’s going on with the event.  I’m really excited to finally go after hearing stories about how fun the event is–two fields, Little Wrigley and Little Fenway* (also on Facebook), hosting games throughout the weekend.  There’s lots to do, good baseball game food, maybe a local celebrity or two…If you’re in the area (let’s face it, Vermont is small so if you live in Vermont or across the lake…) you should definitely go.

I’ve offered to volunteer for the weekend and will be around the entire time–so come say hello,  support the teams, and help raise some money for a fantastic cause!

*Little Fenway was built first, but come on, I live in New York–can’t put the Red Sox first!  The fields are located on Sawmill Road in Essex Junction, Vermont.  Click here for directions.
